Into the Glacier in Iceland – Langjökull Glacier - Take the glacier adventure to a whole new level!
Into the Glacier is one of the most popular activities in Iceland. On this unique tour, you’ll explore both the surface and the inside of Iceland’s second-largest glacier, Langjökull. From the meeting point, you’ll be driven to the top of the glacier in a specially modified 8x8 vehicle. Far from civilization, you’ll reach a man-made ice tunnel carved into the glacier. The tunnel stretches over 500 meters, stands 3 meters tall, and reaches depths of up to 130 feet beneath the surface of the ice!
With an experienced guide, you’ll spend about one hour exploring the remarkable ice tunnel. The guide will share the story behind the tunnel and explain how the glacier has formed and evolved over thousands of years. After a complete tour through the hidden chambers of this icy world, you’ll be safely driven back down the glacier.
Weather can affect the duration of the tour. In winter, it takes about 1 hour to drive up the glacier from Húsafell. In summer, it usually takes around 30 minutes.
If you select the tour with pick-up from Reykjavík, your journey also includes a stop at the stunning Hraunfossar and Barnafossar waterfalls. Clear glacial meltwater flows through black lava fields, creating a wide curtain of small waterfalls – a fascinating meeting of water and volcanic rock. Right next to it, the more powerful Barnafoss surges through a narrow gorge with dramatic energy.
You'll also stop at Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in Europe. Here, nearly boiling water bursts from the ground in a steady cloud of steam – a vivid display of the geothermal forces beneath Iceland’s surface.
Whether you choose the tour with or without pick-up from Reykjavík, we guarantee an unforgettable trip to one of Iceland’s most extraordinary wonders.
