Kerlingarfjöll – Full-day hiking adventure with hot springs and glacial rivers
Kerlingarfjöll is a true wilderness paradise in the heart of Iceland’s highlands. Here you’ll find steaming hot springs (some you can even bathe in!), colorful rhyolite mountains with ice caps, and roaring glacial rivers. All this – and more – can be experienced on this exciting full-day journey through Iceland’s highlands.
Our adventure begins with a pick-up in Reykjavik around 8 AM. Once the group is assembled, we head out of the city and into Iceland’s remote highland interior. Kerlingarfjöll, our destination, is a volcanic mountain range in central Iceland – a picture-perfect area full of geothermal valleys, glacial rivers, and breathtaking panoramic views.
Early in the tour, we make a short stop at the impressive Gullfoss waterfall – one of Iceland’s most iconic natural wonders. From there, we continue along scenic mountain roads through the rugged highlands. Along the way, you’ll witness endless lava fields and snow-capped peaks before arriving in the colorful region of Kerlingarfjöll.
We take a break at the Highland Base in Ásgarður Valley – right at the foot of the mountains – with time to stretch our legs.
The tour then continues to Hveradalir, which means “Valley of the Hot Springs.” It’s one of Iceland’s largest geothermal valleys and a true natural marvel. Some of the springs are perfect for a relaxing soak in the wild, while others are so powerful they’re best admired from a distance. The area is surrounded by distinctive rhyolite mountains, giving the landscape its unique colors and shapes.
We take our time exploring the area and enjoying the views before heading back to Reykjavik, where we arrive in the early evening.
