Reykjadalur Valley is 45 minutes away from Reykjavik and in the vicinity of Hveragerði Town. The name of the valley translates as “the Steam Valley.” As soon as you arrive, you’ll understand the chosen name for the valley! Everywhere the steam is rising up from the hot pots, moss-covered hills and mountains. It is unique and different to experience this.
Reykjadalur Valley is part of the Hengill Volcano geothermal area. Even though the volcano is inactive, the area itself is still very active and home to bubbling hot pots filled with minerals.
A wide trail with a steady slope leads you up to the green valley. The hike is around 2.4 mi (3.88 km) one way and takes you through the Djúpagil Canyon, where you’ll see a stunning waterfall cascade.
Towards the end of the hike, you’ll find wooden paths around the hot springs and semi-private changing stalls. Here you can choose to take a dip in the mineral-rich azure waters of the Reykjadalur Hot Spring Thermal River! This is a relaxing and well reserved brake in the natural hot springs. Keep in mind that the farther up you hike, the hotter the spring will be. The most suitable bathing areas are encircled by wooden docks.
After lunch we’ll hike down Reykjadalur Steam Valley. The views on the descent are equally charming, so make sure you have your camera with you at all times!
